Key to Innovation is Scarcity

“Embrace your constraints,” my friend Steve Rosenbaum, CEO of the interactive agency Pop Art, tells his staff — and now HBR comes with proof he’s right.

As Uri Neren writes, of the 162 innovation methodologies he and his colleagues have cataloged in their World Database of Innovation, only a tiny handful are backed by empirical data.

Of those with a solid evidence-based backing, all share one trait:  they impose scarcity as a spur to creativity.
